Mostly, when memory overtook the moment
and her eyes became brittle as glass,
she thought of the hand held walks they took;
how he would answer every one of her
interminable questions with a smile.
"Why do leaves die and fall off trees grandpa?"
"To make way for the new sweetheart.
It's the same with everything, otherwise
the world would just get all filled up."
"So everything dies then, that's really sad."
"Everything except for giant lollipops and grandpas,
they last forever. Though of course, no-one actually
knows how long forever is, just that it's a
very, very long time."
Three months later, and she found out that
forever was just another word in the dictionary;
but three decades on she still remembers
the hand held walks they took.
